I am trying out some new foods. My kids hate everything anyway. Why not throw some stuff at them that I really want to try? I can hardly be bothered to care anymore that they spend every meal screaming how much they hate whatever I have cooked.
Recently I bought Edamame and Quinoa and fresh parsley. The Edamame is a bag of frozen soybeans. I bought two bags actually, one in the pod and one out. You just cook them in a little bit of water with salt and maybe pepper. The ones in the pod, you have to eat the beans without eating the pod part. That seems odd, but hey, willing to try. The Quinoa is a grain type product. I gather you cook it and eat it like you would rice. Kind of a healthy rice substitute. I also hear it hasn’t got a lot of flavor of its own. I may cook it in some bullion instead of plain water. I may add a handful of some kind of herbs. Like parsley! I read that fresh parsley is super healthy. I have never eaten fresh parsley. I only ever see it as a raw garnish or a dried flake herb. So I bought some fresh. There were two kinds, so I got them both. One is regular, one is Italian. I am cooking with it!
Sunday night I used some sprigs of parsley on top of the beef I roasted in the oven. I couldn’t really notice a difference in the flavor of the meat, but I did eat the little bits of cooked parsley for my health. I also made a small pot of soup Sunday for me to eat as lunches this week. I used some left over beef from one dinner last week, some fresh parsley – both kinds!- , a few bits of cut up sweet potato, some chopped carrot and a bullion cube. The kids won’t eat soup. They don’t like their foods mixed. *eyeroll* So, I made it just for me! I cubed some sweet potato to go with the beef for dinner and we had the Edamame in the pod. I liked it. The flavor was a little like green Lima beans. A bit buttery almost, but no butter was used, a mild flavor, nothing strong. The issue of getting them out of the pods was slightly annoying. Since they sell them without the pods, I won’t buy the podded ones next time.
The kids ate the edamame. They didn’t find it to be their favorite new food or anything, but they ate it! And they do like sweet potatoes. Which are healthier than white potatoes. So, I am not going to buy white potatoes anymore. I also bought a can of Rutabega (am I spelling that right?). The littles wouldn’t even taste it, but my teenager liked it a lot! So, two new vegatables and a replacement starch added to our diet this week. Hopefully, I can keep trying healthier foods and getting the kids to eat them.
I took my teenager to a concert. I thought it was indoors. Half of it was outdoors. I got a sunburn. Half of it was indoors. I got a headache! In case anyone cares, the bands we heard were:
Bury Your Dead
I think there may have been one more, but I can not remember. It was LOUD. The wind blew a lot and it was less than 60 degrees outside. I was wearing short sleeves, so I was cold and got a sunburn. Actually, I didn’t have a terrible time. It was really long, 2pm until 10:30. So I did get tired. But, Lacuna Coil was good, Bury Your Dead was not bad, Crooked X was interesting and Disturbed was excellent. I might would go see any of those again. But not in the sun.
