Tonight, my husband is taking me to see a performance of Hamlet at the Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern.
We go to the Tavern periodically. Usually once or twice a year. It is a fantastic experience. We have seen Romeo & Juliet, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About nothing, Macbeth, Antony & Cleopatra, maybe a couple more that I am blanking on at the moment.
Before the plays start, you go through a line and order a tavern dinner. They have stuff like shepherd’s pie and tomato soup and homemade breads. There is a time period, maybe 6:30 to 7:15 for the dinner part and then everything is cleared away and the play starts at 7:30.
The whole thing is a tiny bit rustic. The chairs are wooden and most of the tables wobble. The floor seems to be some kind of super-shellacked concrete. The stage and stuff are built by the actors and other play company employees. The costumes are all made on site. Not store bought stuff. Very homey all in all. I think they are a non-profit organization.
Some of the actors have been there for absolute eons. We have been going since 1999 and a few of the actors are the same. Others eventually move on and new ones come in. It is comforting to see a familiar face amongst the characters though. To see Mercutio and remember when he was Petruchio. Oh, hey! We saw The Taming of the Shrew. Katharina was Juliet.
My sister is going to be babysitting our kids. And they are sleeping over. We are having the whole night to ourselves! Hamlet will probably be over by midnight. We may go to the Intermezzo or some other fancy schmancy place for coffee and dessert after. It’ll be great. A date night. I am so excited!
