Today was the first day of classes for me for the fall semester. I am taking three courses on campus for the next 4 months. All of them are on Monday and Wednesday while the kids are at school.
I have American History Since 1890 at 8am. I did not get to sleep early enough last night for that to be comfortable! I did make it on time and I did not fall asleep in class, but I was droopy and tired. I have studied a lot of American history on my own already. I do not expect this class to be much hardship. The final grade is comprised of 70% from 3 tests through the semester, 20% from 2 map quizzes and 10% from questionnaires on video presentations that she’ll do 5 times through out the course. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I expect this to be a class I make a relatively easy A in.
I have Geography at 9:30. This is a freshman level course survey. So, a little bit of everything from the field of Geography. Some culture, some physical stuff like borders and landmass formation, some economics and some politics. I also expect to make an A in this class. The final grade is an average of 5 test grades. The final exam is the same percent as the other tests, and if you have an A average after the 4 regular tests, you exempt the final. I plan to exempt the final.
I have a break after Geo so I have time for lunch and checking the internet for fun and email and class updates. We have a Chick-fil-a on campus and it is my favorite fast food. The temptation is going to be to eat there every time I have classes. but monetarily, that is a bad idea. So, I am going to try to remember to make myself a sandwich and stuff to take with me. Then, I can spend even more time goofing off during my lunch break 🙂
At 12:30 I have Latin 1001. It is basically a high school level Latin class. The requirement for graduation is 2001 and 2002. But, I only had 6 months of Latin I back in 1986. So, I am taking Latin 1001 and 1002 this year. It is going to have some of the usual grammar and vocabulary stuff, declension and conjugation and whatnot. But it is also going to have a good bit of history mixed in. I love history! Did I mention I was majoring in history? The final grade for this one is based on several little things like a workbook of grammar and some tests and some quizzes. I actually am planning to make an A in this class too. I am being very ambitious! I really do feel pretty confidant about all of these classes though.
I just found out today that my kids are acting like jackasses at the bus stop in the mornings. Pushing and pulling on each other, arguing, spitting, and just generally being obnoxious. So, I am lecturing them off and on between now and bedtime tonight. Then, tomorrow I plan to head to the bus stop with them and loom over them and intimidate them into behaving properly. I hate going to the bus stop. I like having on my pajamas in the morning. I like not showering and getting dressed until after I have lounged around and checked my email and looked at a magazine or something. I am not a morning person. Having to get dressed and be presentable to go to the frakking bus with the kids is the kind of thing that makes me a grouchy mommy. So, hopefully they will behave better and get the message so they don’t have to deal with me being angry with them before school every day.
Last night we went to my mother-in-law’s and visited with my husband’s god-mother and her husband. They live in Maryland and we do not see them often. They were great to chat with. We made a tentative plan to go to their place in June of 2010. They want us to come and do a bunch of Washington DC stuff with them. By then, the kids will be 16, 10 and 8. So, they should enjoy a lot of Smithsonian stuff. I love the Smithsonian and can hardly wait to get to see the History and Space stuff again. We went to DC and visited the Smithsonian museums way back in 1998. We were actually there the day they announced Princess Diana’s death. I remember standing and staring at the tv in the hotel room and just being stunned and almost disbelieving. At that time, we only had one kid and he was newly 5 years old. I expect next summer’s trip to be much better!
*sigh* So, now I have 3 big fat textbooks I need to read the first few chapters in before class times on Wednesday. I guess I should get started on that soon. Like, maybe even now. We are going to have left-overs for dinner tonight, so I am going to have less hassle this evening. After dinner, I am going to watch the first one or two episodes of Doctor Who season 2, now with David Tennant. Then, I plan to start trying to go to bed at a reasonable hour. I’ll shoot for 11pm tonight. I really need to try and get in bed and to sleep in the 10pm time frame on Sunday and Tuesday nights so I can be rested and alert for classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings. 8am is a ridiculous time to have to be somewhere and paying attention.
