This was the first basket of the summer. School is out and I have the kids all day long. But I also have no time constraints for my afternoons now! So, I am getting two baskets a week and will drive to my sister’s on Wednesdays to take a basket to her. I will only be able to do this for the summer, but it is a great way for her to get some produce and for me to have a regular visiting time.
It is also getting much hotter in the warehouse. I literally end up with sweat running down my face. And my shirts get soaked down the front and back. I feel disgusting. I am going to have to come home and take a shower after co-op for the next few months. There are a couple of industrial sized fans, but there are only the two and they are not nearly enough for the amount of space and bodies involved. A lot more people come to help sort than used to. I think we had 15 or so people this week. Plus, since it is summer, there are a lot more kids. They often do not want to spend their time in the back watching tv. They want to wander around and stand by their mom and help put stuff in the baskets. It gets confusing and crowded. Kid-friendly is the best way to be though. So I am not complaining really, just observing.
This week’s basket:
corn on the cob
green onion/ scallion
there were no leftovers from Thursday, but I did get some extras from this week’s stuff:
green onion/ scallion
Not too many extras this week. Generally, I think the goal is to order the correct amount of food to fill the baskets and not have spent a lot on food that is too many for the baskets. So, some weeks the extras are less. I did grab some of the extras to go in my sister’s basket. After co-op, we often stop at my carpool friend’s mother’s house. My friend has a husband who travels for work, so they only have her and two little girls at home most of the time. She doesn’t really need as much food as we get in the regular basket. but she buys it anyway and then stops by her mother’s and splits the food with her. The mother has planted a little garden in her back yard. Today, she gave me three fantastic fresh picked zucchini! So I have zucchini to go with my other produce.
I think I am going to plan on making more applesauce, half to eat and half to freeze. I will most likely blanch and freeze some zucchini, kale, and peaches. I want to remember to freeze some bananas to make banana bread later with later, too. Anyway. That was this week at the co-op. Next week my friend is out-of-town. I will be taking over her delivery duty. She will actually be gone two weeks. Then the next week, she will be back and I will be gone. We will be together the last Tuesday of June and then I start doing a regular delivery in July. So, I will not really be carpooling anymore. i am going to miss that time in the car talking and stuff.
