I bought some seeds! I bought four packets; Roma tomato, sweet basil, oregano, and baby leaf spinach. I bought some potting soil. I bought some stuff to start seedlings in, both some dirt kind of stuff and some little planters that remind me of deep-dish egg crates. I could only fit 12 seed pods across on my windowsill. I filled all 12 pods with seeding mix and put tomato seeds in 4, spinach in 4 and oregano in 4. I am going to see if they sprout. If they do, then i will transplant them to two nice big planters on my back deck. Then I will line 12 more pods on the windowsill and do more tomato, some basil and more spinach.
I reckon these foods will be organic. I am not planning to use any evil stuff on them. Just water. If all works out, I will have foods blooming on my deck that we will eat! I will hopefully have enough tomatoes to be able to put some aside in the freezer. I will make pesto for hubby with the basil, he loves that stuff. I will use fresh basil and oregano in Italian dishes. And I will cook spinach all the time for hubby and myself! The kids will not eat it cooked, but I can make salads with it for them.
Four different plants should not be too much to keep track of. I am not ready to plow rows in the back yard and grow all our food, but this is a fun project to see if I am capable. If the plants are too much for the planters I have, I will check for some more planters at the thrift store or yard sales. I don’t want to invest too much money in this or it stops being an economical way to have more of the foods we love.
So, feel free to remind me to water my seedlings every day for a while!
